Tony Curanaj (b. 1973) was born and raised in New York. He is a dynamic painter who earned a B.F.A. from the School of Visual Arts, and continued his education at the National Academy of Design. He took an unconventional path to classical art, as he first gained recognition in the world of graffiti under the tag SUB, and as a head designer and painter for Disney. In the late l990’s, Curanaj met Jacob Collins and became a member of the Water Street Atelier, an institution founded on the ideals of academic realism, where his studies and skills flourished. His subjects are classic and edgy, his paintings beautifully designed and masterfully executed with painstaking care. Curanaj currently teaches painting and drawing at the Grand Central Atelier in New York City as well as privately from his studio, also in New York. His work has been exhibited across the US and is in the collections of the Groeninge Museum in Bruges, Belgium, and the Forbes Galleries in New York City.
