Patrice (Pat) Cantin was born in Jonquière, Québec, Canada on November 27th, 1978. After obtaining a degree in photography and painting from the Jonquière CEGEP, he continued studying visual and media arts at the Université du Québec à Chicoutimi, and obtained his BAC from Université du Québec à Montréal. He explored the inter-disciplinary aspects of painting and performance, as well as painting and music, which will clearly influence his subsequent work. Early on, Cantin remembers drawing everywhere, from his school locker to his skateboards. An object once drawn on is an object no more but becomes his creation. Cantin does not identify with any specific artistic movement; he explores abstract as much as figurative present-day art. His creation process comes in two steps. The idea of a painting comes firstly from a composition and a colour. Composition, mostly in regards to his abstract works, is very often the addition of various ideas over time. The materialization on the canvas often suddenly appears from the previous work. There can be superposing at the beginning of a painting but it is the movement on the material that conditions the rest of the work. The result is never predetermined. For Cantin, to give shape to artistic matter is a thrilling adventure.
In his own words:
I like everything that has to do with creation. I experiment with everything. I have so many projects; it is an obligation to get out of bed in the morning.
