Jan Esmann is one of the leading artists of the new figurative painting in Scandinavia. He was born in Denmark in 1960 and was raised in Bury, England. He returned to Denmark in 1967 and has lived there ever since. In his early 20s he spent three years of private studies and analyzing paintings with the danish artist Niels Hermann Wamberg and one year of classical drawing with Egon Bjerg Nielsen at Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek. In his late 20s he went on to study at the Danish Royal Academy of Fine Arts and got his BSc in Art Restoration out of an interest in learning the artists’ traditional craft and historical painting techniques. A couple of years later he earned his MA in Modern Culture from the Copenhagen University. Esmann has worked in the Department of Comparative Literature and the Department of Art History in the University of Copenhagen and has given lectures on Modern Art in the Danish Royal Academy and elsewhere. Combining expert craftsmanship and a firsthand experience of mysticism he evokes images of basic human predicaments. His work has been exhibited in Denmark, USA and Australia. He currently lives and works in Copenhagen, Denmark.
