Tiina Törmänen

Tiina Törmänen is a Finnish photographer. She was born in 1981 in Lapland, in the same village where her ancestors have been living for 200 years. Growing up in a place like Lapland, means that Tiina had to learn skills like light up a fire or use a knife, before she even went to school. She started taking pictures at the age of 17. She took black and white courses, learned to use the darkroom and carried her camera along at all times. She tried to get into art schools on many occasions but never succeeded, so she continued her artistic journey on her own shooting more on film and documentary style photographs. When Tiina returned to Lapland, after having spent 15 years in the south of the country, she was blown away by the rediscovery of the landscape, the beauty, the nature, the absence of light pollution, all things she considered given while growing up. It was then when she began shooting landscapes. Her work has won numerous awards and has been published in a variety of well respected publications both web and print.

SE: We feel there’s something spiritual, even humbling in your photography. The lack of people or man-made objects, the size of them compared to the surroundings. What is it that you want your photography to tell to the viewers?
Tiina: It’s hard to explain but I like to have something deep in my pictures. I think it’s that what you call spiritual. I never really think too much of what I want to tell, I think it’s more like a feeling I want to share and leave the rest to the viewers. I shoot my personal work only when I am in a certain mood, I never shoot if I’m not in that special feeling to do so and I want to keep it that way.

SE: Would you be interested in shooting elsewhere? Different landscapes, cultures, colours, under different light? Do you find this idea challenging? Is it something that’s in your next projects?
Tiina: Hmm, I think there is beauty everywhere. Having been shooting landscapes only for the past few years, I wanted to master my visions at my home landscape in a larger scale first and while I will probably keep my focus on the finnish landscapes, I would love to travel somewhere remote where the landscape will not be much photographed. Let’s see what future will bring.

  1. I enjoyed reading your post on my down time....thank you for sharing!

  2. Great post: Tiina Törmänen is a fellow countrywoman :)

  3. Thank you for liking "Escape," "Transition," and "Movie Poster Misadventure." I also enjoyed seeing these wonderful landscape photos too. I especially like the mystery and quiet beauty of the misty forest and its reflection in the water.
