Ben is based in Sydney, Australia and is represented by Nanda Hobbs Contemporary. He won the 2015 and 2010 Waverley Art Prize, the Mosman Emerging Artist Award and the Odd Nerdrum Self Portrait Competition. He has been a finalist in more than 50 established art prizes across Australia, including the Doug Moran Portrait Prize (2009, 2010) and the Sulman Prize (2010, 2011). Ben has exhibited in South Korea, Denmark, Los Angeles, San Francisco and New York. Ben Smith’s work combines the beautiful and the unsettling, the humorous and the sincere, the banal and the uncanny. Recurring themes in his work include doubt, divergence within a personality and the search for consolation. These themes are explored through multi-layered allegory, using the various expressive possibilities of paint.

These three works are part of a series entitled “Journeys through the interior”. The series depicts figures traveling through metaphorical spaces on various forms of transportation. The paintings are allegories for the fundamental transitions in life.
