Joël Penkman is a New Zealand–British artist, painting semi-photorealistic, contemporary still-life, especially food. She lives in a village outside of Liverpool, England, with her husband and their cat. She grew up in New Zealand where she studied Graphic Design at Canterbury University and afterwards moved to the UK where she worked for 7 years as a graphic designer, before turning to painting. A lot of her work is in egg tempera, the traditional medium used in Greece and Russia for Christian Orthodox iconography. It is a time-consuming medium for which she grinds her own paint and craft gesso boards. Joël enjoys painting food as well as other unexpected subjects and hopes her pictures will make people smile. Her work has been featured in selected online and print publications as well as the Royal Academy of the Arts Summer Exhibition in 2012.
