Founded by Katie Gavin (lead vocals/production), Josette Maskin (lead guitar), and Naomi McPherson (rhythm guitar/synths/production) in 2013, MUNA is a dark pop girl band based in Los Angeles, California blending the brooding sensuality of R&B, rhythms of funk, and audacity of synthpop with raw, unbridled lyricism. They met while studying at the University of Southern California and quickly put together their debut EP, “More Perfect”. Released in mid-2014, the EP brought together their love of the ’80s music and influences that range from the Cocteau Twins and The Cure to The Cranberries and Wilson Phillips among many others. The trio spent the next year writing new material before releasing their sophomore EP, “Loudspeaker”, in May 2016. By the end of the year, they had recorded their debut album, with the resulting “About U” released 3 days ago. They hope their songs lend themselves both to the euphoric dancefloor and emo bedroom solitude.
“I Know a Place”, is the 3rd track from their debut album “About U”. It is a tender rhythmic ballad with a late ’80s/early ’90s sound written about the Orlando shooting. They wrote the song to be the voice in your head that tells you to celebrate peace during wartime and wanted the video to be a depiction of the fact that acknowledging the humanity of your enemy can be the most powerful battle tactic of all. It is directed by Tabitha Denholm.
